Psilocybin or ayahuasca: which ceremony suits you?

Both psilocybin (from truffles) and ayahuasca are used in ceremonial contexts for self-exploration and personal growth. Yet they are fundamentally different substances, with different experiences, risk profiles and legal statuses. This article helps you make an informed choice.

The active compounds

Psilocybin is converted in the body to psilocin and primarily works via the serotonin system. Ayahuasca is a brew of two plants: one containing DMT and one containing MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) that prevent the DMT from being broken down before reaching the brain.

Both cause an altered state of consciousness, but the route, intensity and character of the experience differ considerably.

Duration and intensity

A truffle ceremony lasts 4–6 hours. Ayahuasca ceremonies last 4–8 hours and are often spread over multiple evenings at a retreat (2–5 days). The effects of ayahuasca are generally experienced as more intense, more physical and harder to control.

Physical effects

Psilocybin truffles have relatively mild physical side effects — some nausea is possible, but serious reactions are rare. Ayahuasca is known for intense physical purging (vomiting) and is physically demanding. This is considered part of the healing process in many traditions, but it requires preparation.

Legal status in the Netherlands

Psilocybin truffles are legal in the Netherlands. Ayahuasca is in a legal grey area: DMT falls under the Opium Act, but enforcement is inconsistent. Organisers of ayahuasca ceremonies operate in a legally uncertain territory.

For a truffle ceremony you have the security of a fully legal, professionally offered experience. For ayahuasca, this certainty is lacking.

For whom is each suitable?

Truffle ceremony: suitable for people who want a powerful but manageable experience in a professional setting. Good as a first psychedelic experience, with clear intention and space for integration.

Ayahuasca: often recommended for people with previous psychedelic experience who are prepared for a more intensive, multi-day process. Requires careful screening and thorough preparation.

Conclusion

Neither is better. The question is: what does your situation, your history and your intention call for? We are happy to think through this with you in an intake conversation.
