Truffle ceremony vs. ayahuasca: a practical comparison

The question comes up often: why choose a truffle ceremony over ayahuasca? Or: I have already done ayahuasca — is there still something in a truffle ceremony for me?

These are two genuinely different experiences, even though they often get grouped together as “psychedelic ceremonies.” Here are the practical differences.

Duration and intensity

A truffle ceremony typically lasts four to six hours. You are done the same afternoon or evening. An ayahuasca retreat usually involves multiple nights — often three to five — with each night being a six to eight hour session. The total time commitment is considerably larger.

Ayahuasca is frequently described as more overwhelming. Physical purging is common — in some traditions, it is an intentional part of the process. With truffles, that is much rarer, and the experience tends to be less physically intense.

Legality

In the Netherlands, magic truffles are legally available and ceremonies can be conducted openly. Ayahuasca is more complex legally: the DMT it contains falls under the Opium Act. Ceremonies do take place — including in the Netherlands — often within a religious context, but it is a legal grey area.

Accessibility

Truffle ceremonies are often held in small groups or individually, close to home. You do not need to travel. Ayahuasca is more commonly associated with retreat centres abroad, though providers in the Netherlands exist too.

What they share

Both work with consciousness-altering compounds. Both can produce deep emotional and insight experiences. Both require serious preparation and integration. The direction these experiences take is similar — it is the intensity, duration, and context that differ.

Which is right for you?

If you are new to working with psychedelics, a truffle ceremony is more accessible: shorter duration, familiar environment, legally clear. If you have experience and want a longer, deeper exploration, ayahuasca may be a natural next step.

But ultimately it is not about which is “stronger” or “better.” It is about what you need right now.

A psilocybin truffle ceremony is not for everyone. But if you've made it here, it may be worth exploring.
