Magic truffles vs magic mushrooms: what’s the difference?

Truffles and magic mushrooms are often used interchangeably. That is understandable — they contain the same active compound and produce similar effects. Yet there are important differences, both scientifically and practically.

The botanical difference

Magic mushrooms are the above-ground fruiting bodies of certain fungal species. Magic truffles — officially sclerotia — are underground storage organs of the same or closely related species. Think of it as the underground root system versus the mushroom cap above ground.

Both contain psilocybin, but in different concentrations. Truffles are generally considered somewhat less potent than the strongest mushroom varieties, although this varies considerably by species and preparation.

The legal difference

In the Netherlands, the legal distinction is significant. Since 2008, dried mushrooms have been banned. Truffles, however, were not included in this ban and remain legally available. This makes the Netherlands one of the few countries where truffles can be offered in a legal, professional ceremonial setting.

This legal status creates a paradox: two substances with the same active compound are treated very differently under the law, purely because of their botanical form.

The practical difference

In practice, the experience of truffles and mushrooms is very similar. Both cause an altered state of consciousness lasting 4–6 hours, with effects depending on dosage, set and setting. The main practical difference is availability and dosing.

Truffles are sold fresh in standardised portions, which makes dosing more reliable. Mushrooms — especially dried — can vary more in potency and are therefore harder to dose consistently.

Why we work with truffles

We deliberately choose to work with truffles. Not only because of the legal clarity, but also because of the consistent quality and predictable dosing. Within a professional guided ceremony, this contributes to a safer and more controlled experience.
