What is ‘set and setting’, and why does it shape the whole ceremony?

Calm, prepared ceremony room

Two things shape a psychedelic experience almost as much as the dose itself: your state of mind beforehand (set) and the environment you’re in (setting). The idea comes from psychedelic research in the 1960s, and it has never really been disproven.

At Magische Truffel Ceremonie we take this seriously. Not as marketing language, but as the basis for how we work.

What is ‘set’?

Set is about who you are at the moment of the ceremony: your mood, your expectations, your physical state, what’s going on in your life. An intake conversation beforehand isn’t a formality. We want to know where you’re coming from, so the day fits you instead of working against you.

What is ‘setting’?

Setting is everything around you: the space, the sound, who else is present, and whether you feel safe enough to let go. A chaotic, busy or unfamiliar environment makes it harder to relax, and relaxation is often exactly what’s needed to move through something difficult.

That’s why we deliberately work from one quiet, consistent location. No changing venues, no rush, no group larger than what still feels manageable.

Why it makes the difference

The same truffles, the same dose, can feel completely different in a rushed or unsafe setting than in a calm, considered environment with someone who knows what they’re doing. Set and setting aren’t an afterthought. They’re a big part of why a guided ceremony unfolds differently than experimenting alone at home.

Consider an intake conversation.

A psilocybin truffle ceremony is not for everyone. But if you've made it here, it may be worth exploring.
